Haus der Statistik

Located at Karl-Marx-Allee 1, the Haus der Statistik was used as the headquarters of the Staatliche Zentralverwaltung der Statistik (East German national statistical office, SZS) beginning in 1968. After reunification, the ownership of the building was transferred to the Institute for Federal Real Estate (BIMA). Spanning 45,000 m², the complex was used as the office for the Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service of the former German Democratic Republic. The commissioner used the Haus der Statistik until 2008. Since then the building has stood empty. In the wake of the 2015 city planning workshops reassessing Alexanderplatz, the Initiative Haus der Statistik was formed. This alliance of several major players in Berlin (social and cultural institutions, as well as organisations, artist collectives, architects, foundations and associations) supports an integrated use of the building for arts, culture, education and social issues. In 2016 the ZUsammenKUNFT Berlin – Genossenschaft für Stadtentwicklung urban development cooperative arose out of the initiative.
