Corrie Tan
Corrie Tan is a performance critic and researcher from Singapore. Her current work as a doctoral student lies in interrogating and overturning classist and capitalist conventions of performance criticism – reorienting the critic as a dramaturg, collaborator, archivist, ethnographer and shapeshifter – and looking at regional practices that transform what is often regarded as a solitary profession into a community of practitioners across Southeast Asia.
She will discuss the intersections of performance criticism and political critique by referring to Singapore's controversial Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation bill passed in May 2019 that provoked fears of greater state censorship, and how the critic can act as resistant reader when it comes to acts of governmentalization.
