Manaf Halbouni presents a relief that articulates the sentence »Do you want freedom!« in Arabic calligraphy. This slogan was shouted out to demonstrators by Syrian police as they suppressed and quashed the protests. Halbouni formally counters the elaborately ornamental script with the simplest materials found in cities: the individual letters are moulded in concrete, steel rods hold the words together and in some places, scraps of fabric are integrated.
Manaf Halbouni, born 1984 in Syria, lives and works in Dresden. International exhibitions including Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris (2014), Palazzo Donà Brusa, 56th Biennale di Venezia (2015) and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (2015).
