Charts that are supposed to depict the shopping cart, the pension gap, and migration are anachronistic and testify to a touching failure of abstract representation. Farocki takes collected graphics, diagrams, pictograms and statistics from newspapers, school books, language text books, and documents produced by public authorities, and assembled them into a silent movie, which reconstructs the history of migration in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Harun Farocki, born 1944 in modern-day Nový Jičín in the Czech Republic, was a filmmaker, writer and professor up until his death in 2014. From the mid-90s, international exhibitions of his filmic works with over 100 productions for TV and cinema, including at the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin (2014).
